Ayr to Stanraer

The route between Ayr and Stranraer comprises of five stations – Ayr, Maybole, Girvan, Barrhill and Stranraer.
Opened in 1854 the Ayr and Dalmellington Railway was built to serve the iron works and coal mines in the Doon Valley.

Ayr to Kilmarnock

The route between Ayr and Kilmarnock comprises of six stations – Ayr, Newton-on-Ayr, Prestwick Town, Prestwick International Airport, Troon, Kilmarnock.Railways in this area were originally developed for coal and other minerals. In 1812, the horse-operated Kilmarnock & Troon Railway opened.

Kilmarnock to Dumfries

The route between Kilmarnock and Dumfries comprises of six stations – Kilmarnock, Auchinleck, New Cumnock, Kirkconnel, Sanquhar and Dumfries. When it came to link the Glasgow to Carlisle line with the English railway network, the Annandale Line (now the West Coast Main Line) was the preferred option.

Dumfries to  Gretna Green

The route between Dumfries and Annan comprises of three stations – Dumfries, Annan and Gretna Green.
The history of the Dumfries to Gretna Green line lies in the early 19th century bid to create a railway link from Glasgow via Kilmarnock and Dumfries to Carlisle where it would join the English railway network.
